The Security Situation in Asia and Japan’s Position

Ambassador of Japan to Sweden

Considering the post Cold War situation in the world, the shift in the global power balance, threats such as international and cyber terrorism, development and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction have become among others new challenges for the global security. In light of these challenges, the Asia – Pacific region is faced by a great deal of complexity and uncertainty without enjoying peace dividend in the post War era as does Europe. In this regard, the security environment surrounding Japan has fundamentally transformed and is continuing to evolve, and Japan is confronted with complex and significant national security challenges. While adhering to a basic policy of maintaining exclusively defense-oriented policy, Japan under Prime Minister Abe has developed new security policy orientation in order to seamlessly respond to the new challenges as well as to actively promote to the peace in the Asia – Pacific region.

Ambassador Morimoto will explain Japan’s approach and contribution to stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region.

H.E. Ambassador Seiji Morimoto is currently the Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Sweden. Ambassador Morimoto holds a B.A. degree in Public Law from the University of Tokyo and has extensive experience from the Japanese Ministry for Foreign Affairs. After joining the Ministry in 1975, he subsequently held the positions of Director of the International Press Division, Director of the First West Europe Division at the European and Oceanian Affairs Bureau and Senior Coordinator for Intelligence Analysis at the Information and Research Bureau.

Prior to assuming the position of Ambassador of Japan to the Sweden, he was Ambassador of Japan to the Sultanate of Oman and to the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna. Furthermore, Ambassador Morimoto is a Guest Professor in Middle Eastern Studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo.
