ISDP hosted a seminar on “Peace by Partnership: Europe and Korea in the New Geopolitics of Northeast Asia”
November 13, 2025: On November 7, the Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP) hosted an in-person seminar bringing together experts from Sweden and Europe, and Korea to discuss evolving geopolitical dynamics and key issues, including regional security, Russia-China-North Korea coordination, Korea-Japan relations, the China-Taiwan issue, inter-Korean relations, prospects for Nordic/EU-Korea cooperation.
Discussions focused on:
- North Korea’s nuclear issue: Short-term denuclearisation is unlikely; priority is reducing tensions and advancing a peace process on the Korean Peninsula. Recognition of North Korea’s nuclear status was also discussed.
- Europe-Korea cooperation: Opportunities in green tech, cybersecurity, defence, research, and innovation. Strategic dialogue, military dialogue, and bilateral agreements were highlighted as tools to strengthen cooperation.
- Regional security concerns: China-Russia-North Korea coordination, US-China-Russia dynamics, energy security, and emerging non-traditional warfare tactics in Europe were emphasised.
- Sweden’s perspective: Strong support for Ukraine, managing relations with the United States, and prioritising European security, including NATO-related cooperation.
The seminar concluded with discussions on future South Korea-Europe engagement, highlighting trade, investments, strategic dialogues, and shared security interests.
