April 8, 2024: Niklas Swanström, ISDP’s Executive Director, participated in the South China Sea Sub-forum, which was part of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2024, themed “Guided by Cooperation, Building a Community with a Shared Future in the South China Sea”.

The forum took place from March 28 to March 29, 2024, and was co-organized by the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS), the China Oceanic Development Foundation (CODF), the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance, and the Boao Forum for Asia Secretariat.

The SCS sub-forum provides a high-end platform for close interaction and peer-to-peer dialogues to offer constructive ideas for enhancing regional peace, stability, prosperity, and maritime cooperation.

The main themes of the forum were:

  • Safeguarding peace and stability in the South China Sea and promoting maritime cooperation in the region are the shared responsibility and vision of the countries surrounding the South China Sea.
  • How can the countries of the region promote the construction of a community with a shared future in the South China Sea through a global governance concept of consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits?
  • How can the countries of the region set aside disputes and use marine environmental protection and blue economy cooperation as a starting point to contribute to regional marine governance and cooperation?

Niklas Swanström participated as a speaker in the panel “Construction of the Regional Rules Order in the South China Sea”.
