ISDP opens the Stockholm Center for Arctic Policy and Governance (ARCPOL)

November 2, 2026: ISDP is opening the Stockholm Center for Arctic Policy and Governance (ARCPOL), a dedicated hub for research, dialogue, and policy exchange focused on the geopolitical, environmental, economic, and security developments shaping the Arctic. Along the lines of the established regional Centers of ISDP—such as the Stockholm Center for South Asian and Indo-Pacific Affairs—ARCPOL integrates regional security with global governance.

Alongside the opening of the Center, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Mia Landauer as the Head of the new Center:

“I feel very honored to have been appointed Head of ISDP’s Stockholm Center for Arctic Policy and Governance (ARCPOL). ARCPOL will complement ISDP’s existing geographic focus while exploring new thematic areas, with a particular emphasis on systems analysis.

The Arctic is undergoing rapid environmental and geopolitical changes, while economic interest in the region has grown significantly in recent years. At the same time, the Arctic is warming much faster than any other region in the world. Understanding these interconnected developments is essential for addressing the emerging political and security challenges facing the region.

I will work to ensure that ARCPOL serves as a neutral, bridge-building platform connecting academia, local Arctic and Indigenous communities, and decision-makers in government and the private sector. ARCPOL will strengthen the social science perspective in Arctic research and foster policy dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including the Arctic Council, the European Union, and non-Arctic states with growing economic and strategic interests in the region. It will also contribute to strengthening the scientific foundations for building resilience to cascading and transboundary climate impacts and addressing the security challenges facing the Arctic.”

Dr. Mia Landauer, Head of the Stockholm Center for Arctic Policy and Governance (ARCPOL)
