A Collaborative Event with the Embassy of India in Sweden on “Human Rights, Indian Constitution, and the Emergence of India as a Resilient Power”

The partnership between India and Sweden exemplifies how countries can collaborate across the continent. Their partnership has strengthened through joint initiatives in innovation, climate change, and sustainable development, demonstrating a shared commitment to key global challenges. As both countries pursue greater autonomy in their diplomatic endeavours, this partnership may further deepen, presenting a model for other countries navigating similar geopolitical complexities while having an in-depth understanding of domestic issues and constitutional practices.

This balance of autonomy and partnership may further lead to new alignments and innovative collaborations that address global challenges, thereby enhancing both India’s and Sweden’s positions on the world stage. Understanding the respective domestic developments, progress, and evolving stature of these countries as maturing democracies, along with ongoing legal reforms and vital constitutional issues, including human rights issues in both countries, is integral to this regard. Sweden needs to learn from India, and vice versa. As mature democracies, their testimony to human rights, constitutional practices, and legal process holds strategic and democratic bearings.

To facilitate such understanding, the Stockholm Center for South Asian and Indo-Pacific Affairs (SCSA-IPA) of the ISDP, in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Sweden, organised an event on “Human Rights, Indian Constitution, and the Emergence of India as a Resilient Power” on Monday, 7th July 2025. The keynote speaker of this event was Hon’ble Justice Shri Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India. This event witnessed a panel discussion on “India and Sweden: Learning the Democratic Experiences”, followed by an Interactive Session.

The panel involved, Hon’ble Justice Shri Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Dr. Niklas Swanström, Executive Director, ISDP, Sweden, H.E. Ambassador (designate) Anurag Bhushan, Embassy of India, Stockholm. His Excellency, Mr. Rashid Parivar, a Member of Parliament from the Sweden Democrats Party, also made a few special remarks at the event. This event was attended by several officials, business leaders, and civil society members in Sweden and India, among others. The event was curated and moderated by Dr. Jagannath Panda, Head of the SCSA-IPA of the ISDP.
