May 18, 2026: Niklas Swanström, ISDP’s Executive Director, was quoted by Aftonbladet regarding Donald Trump’s statement on Taiwan following his meeting with Xi Jinping, stating that he does not want Taiwan to be independent.
“Trump’s remarks are not surprising in themselves, the U.S. has always formally held that position, but the way he presented them is all the more remarkable, according to Niklas Swanström.”
“That was very clearly aimed at China, so that China would feel that it was a concession on President Trump’s part,” says Niklas Swanström.
