Indonesia’s Diplomacy after the 2014 Presidential Election

ISPD FORUM with H.E. Ambassador Dewa Made Sastrawan

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Indonesia to Sweden and Latvia

Thursday, April 16, 2015, 10.00-11.30

When President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, claimed victory in the October 2014 Indonesian Presidential Election, many people in Indonesia and from other parts of the world were looking forward to watch him lead Indonesia, and see how his presidential leadership would impact Indonesia’s diplomacy. After 100 days in office, President Jokowi’s determination to deliver on his campaign promises has had implications for Indonesians in their daily life. This is particularly true of areas related to, for example, the policy of the new government on carrying out the maximum punishment provided by Indonesia’s laws for dealing with drug offenders, the lifting of fuel subsidies, as well as the eradication of corruption and upholding the rule of law. This determination to implement the promises made by the President during his campaign has additionally given a new dynamic to Indonesia’s foreign policy.

H.E. Ambassador Dewa Made Sastrawan is the Ambassador of Indonesia to Sweden and Latvia. He has previously held several posts at the Indonesian Embassy to the United Kingdom in London and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, Ambassador Sastrawan has also worked at the Indonesian mission to the United Nations in New York. Ambassador Sastrawan holds a Masters degree in International Relations from Flinders University of South Australia.
