“What can Confucianism contribute to an Ecological Culture?”

Professor Chun-chieh Huang is a leading scholar in the field of Chinese thought, especially Confucianism, and also a prominent public intellectual. In particular, he is known for his studies of Mencius and of “East Asian Confucianisms”. He is currently a distinguished Chair Professor at National Taiwan University (NTU), Honorary President of the Chinese Association for General Education, and a member of the Academia Europaea.

10.50 – 11.15 Jaime Tatay SJ, Madrid

”Christian Faith and Integral Ecology”

Jaime Tatay is a Catholic Priest (Jesuit), forest engineer, theologian, and lecturer at Comillas Pontifical University, Madrid. He teaches several courses, mostly to undergrads, on Sustainability, Ethics, and Christian Social Thought.

11.15 – 11.40 Christine Loh, Hong Kong

”Reflections on Ecological Civilization and Heaven and Earth Relations in Harmony?”

Professor Christine Loh is the chief development strategist at The University of Hong Kong of Science and Technology’s Institute for the Environment. She has a long association with environmental issues including having served in a ministerial position in the Hong Kong government with responsibility for the environment that includes energy, climate change, and biodiversity.

11.40 – 12.05 Michael Northcott, Yogyakarta

“God and Gaia: Recovering Hope in Mother Earth’s Capacity to Heal Our Wounds”

Michael Northcott is Emeritus Professor of Ethics in the University of Edinburgh School of Divinity where he served in many capacities over 28 years including as research manager, responsible for improving the research productivity, through mentoring colleagues in their research activities, and department head. In 2019 he joined the doctoral faculty of the Indonesian Consortium of Religious Studies at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where he co-teaches courses in Religion, Science and Ecology, and Research Design and Methods, and supervises doctoral students.

“Living in Harmony with Nature: Ancient Chinese Perspectives”

Prof. LEE Cheuk Yin is currently Academic Convenor of the Minor in China Studies Programme at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, NUS. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Hubei University, China, and Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

12.30 – 12.55 Fredrik Fällman, Gothenburg

”Hope and Creation: Sino-theological reflections on Ecological Culture”

Fredrik Fällman is Associate Professor of Sinology at the University of Gothenburg, Former Regional Secretary for Asia, Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, and Asia Advisor, Uniting Church in Sweden.
