Sweden and Taiwan: Caution and Optimism Under a ‘One-China Policy

Agust Börjesson, Acting Head of the Stockholm Taiwan Center and Research Fellow at ISDP’s Asia program, contributed a chapter about Sweden and Taiwan for the book “Not Important Enough to Neglect: Taiwan in the Diplomacy of Northern and Central Europe”. The book was published by the Latvian Institute of International Affairs and edited by Dr. Una Aleksandra Bērziņa-Čerenkova, Dr. Kārlis Bukovskis and Imants Lieģis.

Agust Börjesson’s chapter, titled “Sweden and Taiwan: Caution and Optimism Under a ‘One-China Policy’” examines both historical context and current dynamics in a comprehensive look at Sweden-Taiwan relations. The Chapter delves into the history of Sweden’s diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (ROC), the switch of diplomatic relations to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), unofficial relations with Taiwan under Sweden’s one China policy, Taiwan in Swedish politics as well as what dynamics have shaped and are significant to Sweden’s approach regarding potential future scenarios.

The book also features contributions from ISDP associated research fellows, Dr. Zsuzsa Anna Ferency and Dr. Bo-jiun Jing. Read the book in full at the Latvian Institute of International Affairs’ website.
