Johan Engvall is a PhD Candidate in Political Science at the Department of Government of Uppsala University, and a non-resident research fellow with the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute - Silk Road Studies Program. He is working on a dissertation focusing on informal governance and state building in contemporary Kyrgyzstan. He has conducted field studies in Kyrgyzstan on a regular basis over the last several years. He has numerous published articles on Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia in journals such as Problems of Post-Communism and Europe-Asia Studies.
